This Is The Water by Yannick Murphy
This is a novel about a woman. About a mother. About a marriage.
About a murder.
In the brightly lit public pool the killer swims and watches. Amongst the mothers cheering on their swim team daughters is Annie. Watching her two girls race, she’s thinking of other things. Her husband’s emotional distance. Her lost brother. The man she’s drawn to.
Then she learns a terrible secret. Now her everyday cares and concerns seem meaningless. Annie knows she has to act. Above all, she must protect her children.
I give it-5/5
Review- I truly loved this story. The design of the cover is amazing how parts of the story are on the cover. It had me interested by the first page. It's very different from any other story I have read this year, like how it's written. Yannick starts off nearly paragraph with "this is the-" and what she's about to describe in said paragraph or chapter. Also when she is talking about one of the characters she refers to said character as 'you' the reader. Which I thought was fantastic and really make you feel like you're part of the story whilst reading it. Even though the story is about a murderer I love how it goes into details about all the different families that swim at the pool and go for their children's swim meets. You have a mother whose marriage is not like it used to be and has a troubled past because of her brother. You have another mother who believes her husband is cheating on her and hiding things from her. It really shows that even if families look perfect on the outside they still deal with everyday problems and struggles.
One of my favourite parts of the story is the way Yannick describes the murderer. What he looks like, what he does for a job, what he thinks about and how he plans out the murders. There is a quote in the story which I love which says 'We could have wives and children. We could belong to the church. We could be the head of the church-' This quote goes on for the remaining of the page but the point behind the murderer thinking this is that anyone could be a murderer. You never really know until it happens.
I gave this story 5 out of 5 because it's a creepy story you just can't put down. It's so different in the writing technique to other stories that you just have to carry on reading to find out all about the characters and their backgrounds. I really do recommend this to everyone. As it really get's you thinking about people's relationships with their partner and children and also that you never really know who could be a murderer and what goes through people's minds.
