A stunning, sad and darkly funny story about intense female friendship, from award-winning author, C. J. Flood. It all started with a poo in a flowerbed. Rosie and Titania are as close as sisters - closer, in fact. While Rosie is shy, red-faced and passive, Ti is big, tough and daring. They shouldn't be friends, but they are. Creeping out at night, the girls love to secretly wander through their coastal town, exploring empty streets and sharing their frustrations about school and their different, but equally difficult, families. But when Rosie betrays Ti, the two girls run in different directions - making decisions that could do irreparable damage to both of their lives. As Rosie confronts harsh truths, she must find a way back to Ti, and to herself. Whenever I heard the word kindred, I thought of me and Ti.
In a recent article I wrote about ten things you should do with your best friend (appearing next week on Sugarscape!), I included writing a love letter. I have received a few love letters in my life, and none were as weird or as glorious as the one I received from my extremely bored best friend.
My new book Nightwanderers is about two best friends, called Rosie and Ti. Here are Rosie’s and Ti’s love letters to each other. Please use them as inspiration to write your own to a friend…
Love letter from Rosie to Ti
I’m so glad the boys haven’t noticed how beautiful you are yet because when they do I am going to have to interview each and every one of them about their intentions and what they like best about you, etc, and then I’ll get a reputation as a creep and a weirdo, when in fact I am simply being A Wonderful Friend.
So don’t worry about picking a dud because I plan to follow your potential boyf around, questioning him in the most in-depth interview in human history. Even if he seems really nice and handsome and volunteers at the vets at the weekend I won’t stop asking questions until I’m certain that he likes you enough to appreciate the little things. Like, the way you stop being able to hear when in the presence of cake and how you crush chipsticks before you eat them, then pour the last crumbs into your mouth so that some stick to your cheeks ‘for later’.
Once he has proved his worth, I hope he will be lucky enough to get the very best of you, as I have. By which I mean, when he tells you a story that is difficult to recount, you will fall asleep, and he’ll only realise when you start giggling and mumbling about ‘Mick Hucknall’s silver boots’.
Love letter from Ti to Rosie
You are like air to me, not invisible and capable of carrying many smells, but essential and life-giving. Without you I would die, or at least stop eating, or at least eat a bit lot less. In the summer when you put your hair up, and the sun turns your weirdly small ears bright pink, that is when I love you most.
Have you ever written a love letter to your best friend? What did it say? What do you love most about your best friend?
